BULLDOGS OUTLAST HUSKIES IN A DOG FIGHT 66-54

Sunday, November 23, 2008

The 3-point-line was adapted to college basketball nearly 30 years ago.

Sunday afternoon, the Bulldogs used it to their advantage.

The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team used an impressive 3-point attack to edge Michigan Tech 66-54 at the SDC Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich.

The Bulldogs (3-2) knocked down 50 percent (8-of-16) of their attempts from behind the arc; in route to knocking off the Huskies (2-2). UMD also shot a remarkable 80 percent (12-of-15) from the charity stripe and 51 percent (23-of-45) from the floor on the afternoon.

The long bus trip to Houghton didn't seem to bother the Bulldogs, as they came out quickly shooting 50 percent from the field, an eye-popping 57 percent from the 3-point line and a perfect mark from the free-throw line; all higher than the host Huskies.

With the hot shooting, UMD walked into the locker room with a six-point advantage after the first frame, leading Michigan Tech 31-25.

The second half was much of the same, as UMD outshot the Huskies in every aspect of the game, while they ended the afternoon affair with more rebounds and assists than Michigan Tech.

The Bulldogs were guided by junior forward Brian Sykora, who led UMD in both points and rebounds. The Bloomington, Minn. native shot 50 percent from the floor (7-of-14) as he poured in a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds, while the captain added an assist and blocked a shot in the victory.

Junior forward Steve Duncan provided a spark, as he shot 80 percent from the floor (4-of-5) and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The native of Golden Valley, Minn. recorded 13 points and three rebounds, while he added four helpers and a steal on the afternoon.

Junior point guard Jordan Schade also contributed to the Bulldogs' hot hand as he connected on three of his six 3-point attempts, as he scored 11 points and added an assist, while senior guard Steve Klass shot 50 percent from downtown (3-of-6), as he dispatched nine points and a game-leading five assists in the win.

Senior center John Vaudreuil added to the fun as the Bloomington, Minn. native was perfect from the floor and the free-throw line, as the captain racked up seven points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out one assist.

The Bulldogs will now travel home, as they are set open the doors to Romano Gymnasium, when they welcome in Division III affiliate, Wisconsin-Superior (1-1) Tuesday (Nov. 25) at 7:00 p.m.
