IN CLASH OF NSIC KINGPINS; BULLDOGS PREVAIL 75-64 OVER NO. 24 HUSKIES

Friday, January 9, 2009

One would have to look back to the 1994-95 season to find the last time the University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team knocked off St. Cloud State University.

But Friday night, it was the Bulldogs turn for a victory.

A packed house at Romano Gymnasium watched UMD roll past the No. 24-ranked Huskies 75-64 in a clash between the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's top two clubs.

The Bulldogs (12-5 overall; 6-1 NSIC) - who now own sole possession of first place in the always-grueling NSIC - came out of the gates on fire, as they ran out to an eye-popping 29-8 lead within the first 13 minutes of the contest.

However, St. Cloud State (10-3; 5-1) battled back, as they went a 19-9 run of their own to cut the Bulldog lead to 11, as the teams headed to the locker rooms with UMD atop the Huskies 38-27 at recess.

After the break, both teams slugged punches back-and-forth, but the Huskies couldn't creep any closer than 11, as UMD stayed hot throughout the frame en route to the crucial conference win.

With the victory, the Bulldogs increased their current win streak to four games - tying a season high - while they ended the Huskies seven-game unbeaten stretch and snapped the 12-game losing streak to their arch rivals, dating back to Dec. 15, 1994 - 15 years ago.

The Bulldogs were guided by their captain, junior forward Brian Sykora, as he tallied a game-high 26 points, while he ripped down six rebounds in the win. The Bloomington, Minn. native also nailed an impressive 12 of his 14 (86 percent) shots from the charity stripe, while he buried 64 percent (7-of-11) of his shot attempts from the floor.

Senior center John Vaudreuil also chipped in 15 points and a game-leading eight rebounds in the conference match-up, while the big-man sank four of his seven (57 percent) field goals and didn't miss a single free-throw (7-of-7) on the evening.

Fellow senior guard Steve Klass was also stellar in the win, as the captain poured in 14 points and drained a game-high four of his eight shots (50 percent) from beyond the arc, while junior guard Ron White dispatched 10 points, a game-leading eight boards and three steals for the maroon and gold.

In total, UMD racked up higher shooting percentages from both the floor (25-of-47, 53 percent) and downtown (5-of-13, 39 percent) than visiting St. Cloud State, while the host Bulldogs collected more assists and blocked more shots in the win.

UMD will now put their conference lead on the line tomorrow, Sat. (Jan. 10), as they welcome in the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul (6-7; 4-2) to Romano Gymnasium, with the tip set for 8:00 p.m.
