BULLDOGS FALL SHORT IN ANOTHER BARN-BURNER; LOSE 69-64 AT NO. 11 NORTHERN STATE

Saturday, January 17, 2009

A week ago, Northern State University head coach Don Meyer became men's college basketball's all-time leader in wins, as he tallied his 903rd victory on the hardwood.

Saturday night against the University of Minnesota Duluth, he racked up his 904th.

In a highly anticipated Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference clash between the conference-leading Bulldogs and No. 11-ranked Wolves, host Northern State out-slugged UMD 69-64 before a capacity packed house of 6,613 raucous fans at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D.

The game started with each club pressing their hard-nosed defense up against one another and it was not until roughly two minutes after the opening tip, that the large crowd saw the first bucket by the Wolves (13-3 overall; 6-3 NSIC). As the frame continued, Northern State held the upper hand on the Bulldogs (13-7; 7-3) - who never led in the half - as the Wolves led by as much as nine points early on.

However, in a contest that up-and-down throughout the entire night, UMD cut Northern State's lead down by the break, as they trailed 30-24 when the teams headed for the locker rooms.

After recess, the Bulldogs came out quick, scoring 11 of the first 15 points, as they led for the first time all the night, 35-34 less than four minutes into the second half. UMD led by as much as five in the half, but the fast-paced game saw each squad exchange blows all evening and with two-and-a-half minutes on the clock, the score was knotted up at 61-61.

Within those last couple minutes of play, Northern State took advantage of the Bulldogs' mistakes, as they ended the affair scoring eight of the last 11 points, cashing in on a jumper and nailing their last six shots from the charity stripe to seal the deal.

UMD - who has now lost their second straight NSIC contest - was guided by their junior guard Ron White, as the transfer student poured in a team-high 14 points and collected five rebounds, while the Chicago, Ill. native added a pair of steals, one assist and was a percent 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the conference loss.

The men in the middle for the Bulldogs also had solid evenings for the maroon and gold, as senior center John Vaudreuil tallied 11 points and eight boards, while junior forward Brian Sykora posted 10 points and a team-leading nine rebounds in the defeat.

Sophomore center Ivan Frankin and freshman point guard Ryan Rasmussen also produced for UMD, as they each dispatched seven points a piece, while senior guard Steve Klass knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, en route to scoring six points on the night.

After the final whistle, the Bulldogs shot 60 percent from the charity stripe (15-for-25), 42 percent from behind the arc (5-for-12) and 40 percent from the floor (22-for-55) in the tough loss.

UMD - ranked second in the conference - will now pack up and head home, as next weekend they are set to welcome in another NSIC rival, when they collide with Bemidji State University (7-10; 5-5) - ranked eighth in the conference - on Alumni Day, Saturday (Jan. 24) at 5:00 p.m. from Romano Gymnasium.
