Another week, another dominating performance

Seven days after opening its 2008 season in decisive style, the University of Minnesota Duluth continued to roll -- and how -- by blasting Missouri Western State University 47-18 Saturday night in its first-ever trip to St. Joseph, Mo.

Sophomore Isaac Odim rushed for 119 yards (becoming the first Bulldog running back to crack the 100-yard plateau in three years) and a pair of touchdowns on just 15 carries while senior quarterback Ted Schlafke threw for two scores and for another to lead the No. 17 Bulldogs to the non-conference victory over the Griffons (1-1 overall). Schlafke made good on 21 of 27 passes for 282 yards and also added 32 yards on the ground to move into first place on UMD's career total offense charts. The three-year team captain now has 10,013 yards to his collegiate credit, 87 more than the previous recordholder, Ricky Fritz (1998-2002).

Freshman wide receiver D.J. Winfield, one of the stars in last week's 40-0 triumph at Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Concordia University-St. Paul, was on the receiving end of a team-high six of Schlafke's passes, which he parlayed into 83 yards and two scores. Those two touchdowns came in the opening half, when the Bulldogs raced out to 21-6 lead.

The Bulldogs, who snapped a four-game losing steak to Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponents (prior to tonight, they hadn't defeated a current MIAA club since 1954), forced six turnovers for the second straight week. That included three interceptions, one of which junior cornerback Cole Strilzuk returned 65 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown -- his second in the last three games.

Defensively, sophomore Robbie Aurich topped the Bulldogs with eight total tackles and fellow inside linebacker Kiel Fetchelkotter was credited with seven stops and one interception. UMD llmited Missouri Western to just 12 first downs and 257 total yards on the night while handing the Griffons' their most lopsided home loss in a decade.

The Bulldogs, off to a 2-0 start for the sixth time in eight seasons, will make their 2008 home debut this Thursday with a NSIC clash against Southwest Minnesota State University which will be televised nationally by CBS College Sports Network.
