Saturday, November 8, 2008
Being in the month of November already means playoff volleyball is just around the corner.
And the No. 17-ranked Bulldogs are playing their best.
In an intriguing Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference pairing of two nationally-ranked programs, UMD used a solid team attack Saturday afternoon to knock off Augustana College (S.D.) 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 25-13) in front of crowd of 512 raucous fans at Romano Gymnasium.
In a match with a playoff-like atmosphere, the Bulldogs (22-8 overall; 13-5 NSIC) rallied behind their home faithful, as they recorded more kills, assists, digs and blocks, while they amassed a higher hit percentage than the visiting Vikings (20-10; 12-5).
The majority of UMD's success came at the net, where they piled up an eye-popping 67 kills for a stellar .324 hit percentage, while on the defensive side, the Bulldogs collected 12 blocks and 58 defensive saves.
The relentless UMD attack was led by Bulldog junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels, as she racked up 14 kills for a match-leading .591 hit percentage, a match-high 13 digs and five total blocks in the conference win.
Freshman middle blocker April Hansen also added to fun by pounding home a match-leading 18 kills for a .368 hit percentage and four block assists, while senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont posted nine kills and a match-high six block assists.
Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff had another consistent night at her position, as she tallied a season-high 54 set assists to her Bulldog hitters, while she accumulated a match-leading 13 digs, .500 hit percentage and assisted on five blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos also chipped in 14 kills for a .321 hit percentage, as sophomore outside hitter Katie Kuffel dispatched a career-high ten kills and a solo block on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs will close out their regular season next weekend, as they are set to hit the road for their final two NSIC engagements. On Friday night (Nov. 14) UMD will clash with Upper Iowa (11-17; 3-13) at 7:00 p.m., while they will tango with Winona State (9-16; 7-9) the following Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
