BULLDOGS SLOTTED THIRD IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

With over 90 percent of its roster from a year ago intact, the University of Minnesota Duluth is expected to be in the thick of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference race by season's end once again. Coaches around the league spoke in their annual preseason poll, which pegged the Bulldogs as the No. 3 team in the conference.

Minnesota State University-Mankato was crowned the NSIC's preseason favorite, receiving 11 of a possible 15 first place votes (coaches may not vote for their own team) and 221 points overall. Winona State, winner of the 2011 NSIC crown, came in second with 212 points and the remaining first place votes. The Bulldogs received 191 points in the poll.

UMD put together an 11-6-1 record last fall, going 10-3 against NSIC competition en route to a third place finish in the league. The Bulldogs return their top three scorers and graduated just one letterwinner from the 2011 club. UMD opens the season Aug. 30 in Marquette Mich., at Northern Michigan University.
