FOUR BULLDOGS NAMED TO UMD CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Sunday, September 9, 2012

After sweeping through 12 sets en route to a four-win weekend the University of Minnesota Duluth was well represented on an individual level, with a quartet of Bulldogs being named to the UMD Classic All-Tournament Team.

Junior outside hitter Kate Lange, senior middle blocker Kalli Lochner, sophomore libero Julie Rainey and rookie middle blocker Monica Turner represented UMD on the eight-member team.

An All-American outside hitter from Hibbing, Minn., Lange led all attackers with 62 kills (5.2 per set) on the weekend. She topped the kill department for No. 6 UMD in all four outings, posting a double-double and collecting 35 digs for the tournament. Lange also made her presence felt at the net with 10 total blocks. Lange became the 16th Bulldog to reach 1,000 kills for a career Saturday night against the University of Minnesota Crookston and was named the tournament's most valuable player -- as she was a year ago at the 2011 UMD Classic.

Lochner, an AVCA All-Central Region selection last fall, Lochner clubbed 30 kills and hit at a .315 clip for the weekend. Always a defensive threat in the front row, the Cross Plains, Wis., native added seven total blocks to her credit over the four-match stretch.

A member of the 2011 UMD Classic All-Tournament team, Rainey led all tourney defenders with 62 digs despite playing in just 12 sets on the weekend. Rainey averaged over five digs per frame and came up with 14 more saves than the next closest competitor in that department.

Already a legitimate impact freshman, Turner strung together a sparkling first few games at Romano Gymnasium. The former Lakeville South standout was far and away the most productive blocker in the tournament, finishing the tournament with a total of 21 (the next closest individual posted 11 total blocks.) Turner brought it on offense as well, putting down 34 kills on the legs of a .388 hitting percentage.
