Monday, October 15, 2012
Amidst the longest road stretch of the season, the Bulldogs were knocked off the pedestal tumbling three spots down to No. 6 in the recent American Volleyball Coaches Association poll that was relased Monday.
UMD (18-2) dropped their second match of the year against Augustana on Friday night losing the topsy-turvy match in five sets (13-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-27,15-11). Not to be outdone, the Bulldogs roared back the following afternoon to dismantle the then-No. 19 Wildcats in straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-23).
Four other teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference litter the AVCA Top 25 in this week's poll. Southwest Minnesota State assumes the top position for the first time in school history, Concordia- St. Paul (4), Minnesota State- Mankato (13) and Wayne State (18) are the remaining schools.
The fight is on for the NSIC crown. UMD, who is looking to repeat as title holders for the first time since 1998-99 (2006-07 in the North Central Confernce), is currently in a three-way-tie for second place with 10 games left in conference play.
The Bulldogs will be back in action with a slew of home games this week, beginning Tuesday night against St. Cloud State, then a weekend throwdown against Upper Iowa (Friday) and Winona State (Saturday).
