Held down the No. 1 spot on the club scoring charts in each of his two seasons with the Bulldogs (he had spent the previous two years at the University of Michigan and Hibbing Junior College before transferring to UMD) ... averaged 13.6 points per game in 49 career Bulldog outings ... graduated from UMD in 1955 with a B.S. degree in social studies, history, and physical education ... has spent the years since racking up more victories than any head coach in the history of Minnesota high school basketball ... sports an overall record of 662-256 (for a .712 winning percentage) in four decades of prep coaching -- McGregor High School (1955-59), Barnum High School (1959-61) and Chisholm High School (1961-present) ... also headed the boy's track and field programs at each of those high schools ... his Chisholm Bluestreaks have appeared in eight Minnesota State High School Tournaments and have taken home three state titles (1973, 1975 and 1991) ... is a member of the Minnesota State High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.

On Feb. 1, 2014, UMD, head coach Matt Bowen and graduate assistant Bryce Tesdahl (McDonald's grandson) honored Chisolm High School head coach Bob McDonald. McDonald earned career win number 1,000 on Dec. 26, 2013 in his 59th season coaching and 53rd with the Bluestreaks. Coach McDonald is the only high school coach in the state of Minnesota and just one of 13 coaches in the nation to reach this milestone.
