Earned nine letters in three different sports at UMD ... Started at both quarterback (one year) and safety (three seasons) for the football Bulldogs ... Was voted to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Team (quarterback) in 1961 after pacing the league in total offense and setting a host of UMD passing records .. Returned four punts for a touchdown and one kick off (for 95 yards which is still a Bulldog record) as a collegian ... Became the first Bulldog to crack the 1,000-yard plateau for total offense in 1961 ... Helped lead the Bulldogs to MIAC football titles as a junior and senior ... Was a member of two MIAC championship clubs (1958-59 and 1960-61) and one NAIA National Tournament qualifier (1958-59) during his three-season basketball career ... Participated in the 1962 and 1963 Concordia College Coaching Clinic All-Star Football Game and was named the event’s Most Valuable Player in 1963 ... Served as a Bulldog assistant football coach for six years and went on to coach the men’s and women’s skiing programs at UMD ... Spent one season (1963-64) as the head football coach and assistant boy's basketball coach at Atkin (Minn.) High School before returning to his alma mater ... Began a 41-year tenure with UMD's Health, Physical Education and Recreation staff in 1965 and took over as the department head in 1979-80 ... Held the title of Associate Dean for the College of Education and Human Service Professions at UMD from 1991 until his retirement in 2003 ... Is a native of Two Harbors, Minn ... Graduated from UMD in 1963 with a B.S. degree in physical education and subsequently earned both a Master's degree in education (University of Minnesota, 1970) and PhD (University of Utah, 1977)
