Was a four-year fixture in both the UMD offensive and defensive backfields ... Attained All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors as a junior and senior ... Led UMD in rushing in 1966 en route to being named the Bulldogs’ Most Valuable Player and in scoring the following year ... Started at both offense and defense (safety and running back) during his final three seasons of eligibility and also handled the Bulldogs’ kick and punt return duties ...named UMD's Outstanding Freshman in 1964 an d Landed a spot on the NAIA All-District 13 Team two years later ... Captained the 1967 Bulldogs and participated in the Upper Midwest College All Star Game the ensuing summer... Was the recipient of the 1967-68 Anderson-Dahle Award as UMD’s top scholar-athlete ... Received a Bachelor of Science degree in history from UMD (1968), a Master’s degree in economics/education from the University of Colorado (1970) and a Doctorate in educational administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Education (1974) ... Served as the head football coach at his alma mater, Minneapolis Central High School, for two seasons (1970-72) after spending the previous two years there in an assistant coaching role.
