Was a four-year fixture in both the UMD offensive and defensive backfields ... Attained First Team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors as a junior and senior ... Led UMD in rushing in 1966 en route to being named the Bulldogs’ Most Valuable Player and in scoring the following year ... Started at both offense and defense (safety and running back) during his final three seasons of eligibility and also handled the Bulldogs’ kick and punt return duties ...named UMD's Outstanding Freshman in 1964 and landed a spot on the NAIA All-District 13 Team three years later ... Captained the 1967 Bulldogs and participated in the Upper Midwest College All Star Game the ensuing summer... Was the recipient of the 1967-68 Anderson-Dahle Award as UMD’s top scholar-athlete ... Graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in history from UMD (1968), a Master’s degree in economics/education from the University of Colorado at Boulder (1970) and a Doctorate in educational administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Education (1976) ... Served as the head football coach at his alma mater, Minneapolis Central High School, for two seasons (1970-72) after spending the previous two years there in an assistant coaching role. While at Minneapolis Central he taught history and economics.
