Was a three-year fixture in goal for the Bulldogs and their team captain in 1970-71 ... selected to the All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association second team as a senior ... departed the UMD program among the netminder leaders in virtually every career and single-season category ... was presented with the 1970-71 UMD Outstanding Senior Athlete Award ... spent 14 years in the National Hockey League with the New York Islanders (1973-81), Colorado Rockies (1981-82), New Jersey Devils (1982-86) and Philadelphia Flyers (1986) before retiring in 1986 at the age of 37 ... appeared in three NHL All-Star Games (1976, 1977, 1983) ... member of the 1979-80 Stanley Cup champion N.Y. Islanders ... winner of the NHL's Bill Masterson Award in 1981-81 for his perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey ... was runnerup in the Vezina Trophy (NHL's top goaltender) balloting on three occasions (1976, 1977, and 1979) ... played in 571 games in the "Bigs" and posted 231 victories ... shifted over to the television booth following his NHL career ... was the color commentator on North Star broadcasts for the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons ... handles those same chores for UMD hockey telecasts (KBJR-TV) for three years (1987-90) ... served as the Minnesota North Stars' goaltending coach in 1989-90 before being employed as the general manager for the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League the next season ... is a native of Regina, Saskatchewan.
