Ended a 38-year career as a coach, teacher and athletic administrator in 1969 ... took over a one-year old varsity football program in 1931 and over the course of a quarter of a century built the Bulldogs into small college power ... the Bulldogs won or shared no less than six Northern Intercollegiate Conference football titles (1932, 1934, 1937, 1938, 1946 and 1948) during his reign ... racked up a 24-year coaching record of 84-76-9 at Minnesota-Duluth and produced one of only two unbeaten teams in UMD football history in 1938 (7-0-1) ... replaced Frank Kovach as the head basketball coach in 1932 (its third year as an intercollegiate sport) ... directed the Bulldogs to four straight NIC basketball championships (1933-37) ... his 1935-36 club compiled a winning percentage (.904 with a 19-2 overall mark) which has yet to be matched by a Bulldog basketball team ... ranks fourth on the all-time Bulldog coaching win charts with 105 victories (to go with just 79 losses) ... served as UMD's Director of Athletics from 1955 to his retirement in 1969 ... resurrected the UMD wrestling program in 1966 and coached that contingent for a pair of seasons ... is one of 12 charter members of the NIC Hall of Fame ... lettered three years as a fullback at the University of Minnesota (1922-24) before entering the coaching arena
