This past weekend, the University of Minnesota Duluth track and field teams headed south to escape the snow and open up their outdoor campaigns at the Wartburg Outdoor Select. The Bulldogs competed on both Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5 at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where ominant performances were had by both squads on the track as well as the field.
Fifth year Shaelyn Hostager claimed first in the women's 5000m race with a time of 17:23.45, and junior teammate Elizabeth VanLoon was the next to cross the line in a time of 18:17.08.
Senior Savannah Schley also ran to a first place finish in the women's 800m with a time of 2:16.18.
On the men's side, the 800m was won by fifth year Owen Dickenson in a time of 1:56.95, and junior Will Heydt clinched the top spot in the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.74m.
Additionally, sophomore Erin Steinman claimed second in the women's triple jump (11.42m), and fellow sophomore Graycee Roubinek threw to a second place finish in the women's javelin throw (36.15m).
More runner-up placings came from fifth year Jack Van Kempen in the men's 3000m steeplechase (9:26.95), and freshman Hailey Hollar in the women's 200m (25.12).
The Bulldog relays also saw a weekend of success. The men's 4x100m relay team of Cole Brisbois, Billy Auvin, Brock Unger, and Brady Johnson took second with a time of 41.58, and the women's 4x400m relay team of Emily Bastian, Avary Fitzpatrick, Sevanna Burke, and Madi Wodele also took second with a time of 4:04.99.
The UMD track and field teams will resume action next Saturday, April 12 at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn.
