Worked in virtually every administrative capacity in the UMD Athletic Department -- ticket manager, sports information director, business manager, assistant athletic director, and director of athletics (1969-83) -- during a professional career which spanned nearly a quarter of a century ... lettered twice as a goalie for the hockey Bulldogs (1954-56) before moving on to the head coaching ranks in 1959 ... skippered the Bulldogs to a pair on MIAC titles the first two years of his nine-season coaching tenure ... was UMD's head coach when it became an NCAA Division I hockey-playing institution (1961-62) and a member of WCHA (1965-66) ... served lengthy stints as the scheduling coordinator for the WCHA and as the chairman of the NCAA Ice Hockey Rule's Committee ... recipient of the WCHA's Distinguished Service Award in 1988 ... played an instrumental role in the drive for renovation of UMD's indoor and outdoor athletic complexes which subsequently took place in the mid-1980s ... elected to the Duluth-Superior Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 ... is the namesake of UMD's on-campus athletic facility (Romano Gymnasium).
