Under the direction of Dr. Ben Nelson, MD, the athletic trainers at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) are responsible for delivering healthcare to all student-athletes participating in UMD-sponsored athletic events. The UMD Sports Medicine Staff, comprised of 8 licensed athletic trainers, will provide adequate medical coverage for all student-athletes involved in intercollegiate athletics. Each member of the athletic training staff will contribute equally to this service. The Sports Medicine Staff will operate within the guidelines outlined in the UMD Athletic Training Department Policies and Procedures Manual, the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook, and the NCAA Manual.

Mission Statement
The Athletic Training program is predicated upon the belief that all athletes regardless of age, race, gender, or sport affiliation will be treated equally. They have the right to pursue their sport(s) in a safe manner. We intend to provide an environment which is conducive to both mental and physical well being of the University of Minnesota Duluth’s intercollegiate student-athletes. In doing so, we will strive to deliver the highest quality of care to the student-athlete. This care will consist of athletic injury prevention, evaluation, first aid and treatment, appropriate medical referral and orthopedic rehabilitation. Athletic Training functions as a coordinating entity to help other disciplines provide education, research, and service in both health care as well as human performance.Â
