Alex Wojciechowski becomes the latest University of Minnesota Duluth baseball product to be taken in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft as Philadelphia selects the Bulldogs first baseman in the 15th round of the 2016 Draft on Friday afternoon.
"Wojo" becomes the fifth player in UMD history to be drafted and ninth to play professional with the first pick of round 15 and the 437th overall pick in the draft. He is the second-highest drafted Bulldog of all time and earliest since John Engen ('79) in 1980 was picked with the 145th overall pick. Tim Battaglia ('04) was the last Bulldog selected in the draft, joining the Cleveland organization as a 50th round pick (1,476 overall) in 2004. Battaglia remains the all-time Bulldog leader in career batting average (.411) while Wojciechowski finished his career leading UMD in all-time hits, home runs, runs batted in, runs scored, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, doubles, and total bases. During the 2016 season, he became a unanimous First Team All-American, sweeping the Player of the Year honors from all five major organizations in NCAA II.
