KOHLWEY AND TROST TO REPRESENT UMD AT 2018 NCAA II OUTDOORS

A pair of All-Americans -- junior Danielle Kohlwey and senior Emi Trost -- will represent the University of Minnesota Duluth at the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which get underway on Thursday (May 24) at the Irwin Belk  in Charlotte, N.C.. It will mark the third trip to the NCAA II outdoor nationals for both Kohlwey (2016-18) and Trost (2015, 2017 and 2018).

Kohlwey, a native of Onalaska, Wis., will take part in the 100-meter hurdles for the third year in a row, having finished sixth in 2017 (to attain All-American status) after not making the finals the previous spring. Her qualifying time of 13:50 (a school record which she posted at the Drake Relays on April 28), is currently the second fastest in the country, trailing only Janelle Perry's (Ursuline College) 13.23 clocking.

Trost, the reigning NCAA II outdoor 1,500-meter champion, is scheduled to compete in the 800-meter run in what will be her 10th, and final, NCAA national meet (four cross country,  three outdoor track and three indoor track). The Goodhue, Minn., product, who last month was chosen UMD's Outstanding Female Athlete for 2017-18, ran a 2:10.74 in her last outdoor competition (the NSIC championships on May 12), which ranks 20th among the entrants she'll be going up against in Charlotte. This will be Trost's national outdoor debut in the 800-meter event  (she qualified for it last year, but elected to not run despite registering the nation's second-fastest time -- a school-record 2:04.62  -- that spring). Trost, who sat out the entire 2018 indoor season while nursing an injury, is the first Bulldog to qualify in the outdoor 800 meters since 2012 when Lexi Williams took home a national championship.

Preliminaries for the 800-meter run are set for 6:20 p.m. (ET) Friday with the finals taking place the following afternoon at 5:15 p.m. The 100-meter hurdles are also on Thursday (6:55 p.m.) and the finals on Saturday (4:15 p.m.).

Kohlwey and Trost will practice at 4 p.m. at Malosky Stadium in Duluth on Monday before departing for North Carolina the next day.
