The University of Minnesota Duluth led by 18 at the half and held on to defeat No. 22 Michigan Tech University 84-80 in Houghton, Mich. on Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard
Danielle Flood had 11 points in the first half as the Bulldogs (3-1) opened up a big-time lead over Michigan Tech (1-2). The Huskies scored the game's opening point, but before three minutes had passed, the Bulldogs led 10-1. UMD shot 58% in the opening half to lead 42-24 and just needed to keep pace with the Huskies the rest of the way.
Senior center
Hannah Rutten had her second double-double in as many games with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Flood finished with 20 points, five assists and four steals, while senior forward
Katrina Newman also hit double-digits scoring with 11 on the afternoon.
Tech shot just 28.0 percent in the opening half, but stormed back, shooting 51.3% in the second to make it interesting, but the Bulldogs' dominant first half held up.
UMD opens up Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play next weekend as they travel to St. Cloud State University. The Saints and Huskies tip-off the conference season at 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
