Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth snapped a losing skid on its home court in knocking off Augustana (S.D.) College in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match-up at Romano Gym.

Katrina Newman and
Hannah Rutten led the way as UMD (10-9, 7-8 NSIC) opened up a 20-point halftime lead at 53-33 over the Vikings (11-8, 7-8 NSIC). Rutten collected eight rebounds, seven on the defensive end, in the opening frame along with eight points. Newman led the Bulldogs with 14 points in the opening half on 6-of-9 from the floor. Taylor Meyer also added a strong first-half effort with 13 points, but it was second chances that helped the Bulldogs, who had 13 offensive rebounds to just seven defensive for Augustana, as they shot 52.6 percent in the opening half.
The Augie squad came out swinging in the second half with Shaunteva Ashley leading the way as she collected 12 second-half points and the Vikings made a run at UMD. UMD's seniors continued their offensive efficiency with Newman collecting a game-high 23 on the night. Rutten finished with a double-double: 17 points and 13 boards. Danielle Flood went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute to put the game on ice. Flood finished with 12 points on the night for the Bulldogs.
UMD out-rebounded the Vikings 47-to-37 on the night. The Bulldogs were slightly less efficient in the second half but finished at 45.2 percent for the game. After shooting just 31.3 percent in the opening frame, Augustana combined for nearly 40 in the second for a 35.3 percent game average.
Tomorrow afternoon, Bulldog fans will have the opportunity to donate their hair to "Locks of Love" in a special event as UMD plays host to No. 9 Wayne State College (19-2, 12-2 NSIC) in another tough NSIC battle. The Bulldogs are encouraging donations of 8-10" of hair for those who suffer from disease or illness resulting in hair loss.
