The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team is the definition of a squad firing on all cylinders, and everything that could go right for the Bulldogs did exactly that at AMSOIL Arena Friday night.

No. 9/10 UMD buried Cornell University 7-2 behind a overwhelming four-goal third period and a total of 13 different players who contributed to the scoresheet.  Seven players recorded two or more points on the evening, with sophomore defenseman Sidney Morin leading the Bulldogs with three points on a goal and two assists.

"Huge win for our team tonight, huge win for us in NCAA rankings," said head coach Shannon Miller who is now 2-0 all-time against the Big Red.  "Cornell's one of the best teams in their league and I thought we played a complete game from Kayla (Black) to our defensemen all the way through.  It was a complete win with lots of people scoring, just a great night."

The Bulldogs got behind the Big Red 1-0 at 8:39 of the first period but trailed less than two minutes.  Senior winger Zoe Hickel finished off a give and go from Meghan Huertas by roofing the puck in what would be the start of three unanswered goals for UMD.

That 1-1 score would hold for the rest of the first period, but the Bulldogs had a different idea for the game in the second stanza.  Morin warmed up the scoreboard a mere 2:09 into the action, getting her own rebound behind the extended goal line and banking it in off the skate of Cornell netminder Paula Voorheis for the power play score.  Sophomore Michela Cava would do the same thing 3:36 later on the opposite of the net, pushing the UMD lead to 3-1.  An errant Bulldog pass gave Cornell a breakaway goal at the 11:04 mark of the second, but the Big Red would come no closer to breaking the Bulldogs now eight-game winning streak.

UMD exploded for four goals over a 12:31 span in the third period, starting with Hickel's second tally at 2:03.  The final 20 minutes was a passing clinic by the Bulldogs, firmly on display on Ashleigh Brykaliuk's goal at 9:01, the result of an unselfish cross crease pass from linemate Jenna McParland.  Brigette Lacquette and Meghan Huertas would round out the scoring for UMD— both also registered assists earlier in the skate.

On a night that the Bulldogs could do no wrong, their stats backed it up.  UMD was a perfect 5-of-5 on its penalty kill and a whopping 50% on its power play with three goals on six attempts.  UMD outshot Cornell 41-27 and junior goaltender Kayla Black had 25 saves for the winning cause.

The Bulldogs (9-4-2) and Big Red will close out the series tomorrow night at AMSOIL with a 6:07 p.m. start.

BULLDOG NOTES:  UMD had 13 players on the scoresheet for the first since Feb. 22, 2012 … both Asheligh Brykaliuk and Jenna McParland extended their impressive scoring streaks … Brykaliuk has now amassed 13 points (6g, 7a) over her last seven games, while McParland has recorded eight points (3g, 5a) in her last six skates … UMD has scored at least six goals four times in its last six games.
