The University of Minnesota Duluth scored 51 points in the second half but couldn't overcome a 24-point deficit, falling 78-69 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition against Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Romano Gymnasium.
UMD (4-5, 2-3 NSIC) had their second slow start in a row as they missed their first four shots from the field. It wasn't until the
18:18 minute mark that UMD was on the board with junior forward
Taylor Meyer hitting 1-of-2 from the line. MSU (4-5, 3-2 NSIC) would slowly build up a lead shooting 13-of-30 (43.3%) and holding UMD to just 6-of-31 (19.4%) in the opening frame.
HIGHLIGHTS• Junior guard
Taylor Dillinger was quick and active on defense with a game high with 6 steals. She also added in 10 point and 5 assists during her 28 minutes of play, making her the Bulldog player of the game. UMD had four players in double figures for points. Leading the way was senior
Jessica Newman with 18.
• UMD capitalized on MSU turnovers scoring 24 points off of 10 Dragon giveaways.
UMD had some work to do coming into the second half down by 14 points. Wasting no time, the Bulldogs quickly went on a 11-2 run in just over two minutes of second half play. After that point, UMD failed to gain any ground as a series of three-pointers from the Dragons grew their lead. Overall, the Dragons bench outscored the Bulldogs 27-6 in the game. A late-game push gave UMD some hope as they closed the gap to six on a free throw by sophomore forward
Kenzie Kane, but they did not give themselves enough time as MSU-Moorhead held on for the win.
