It took a little extra time, but the No. 8 Bulldogs skated off OSU Ice Rink with two Western Collegiate Hockey Association points Friday night.
The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team overcame two one-goal deficits Friday to earn a 2-2 tie with Ohio State University before shutting out the Buckeyes in the mandated WCHA shootout. Â The tie brings UMD's overall record to 11-5-3 overall and 6-5-2 in the WCHA, securing third place by a single point over the University of North Dakota.
The Buckeyes struck first on a goal by Danielle Gagne midway through the second period. Â UMD would equalize 4:27 into the third period on a power play goal by sophomore winger
Ashleigh Brykaliuk, her 10th goal of the season and third power play score.
Called for two penalties less than two minutes apart, the Bulldogs surrendered another go ahead goal off the power play to OSU at 8:32. Â UMD refused to fold once again, this time banking a goal from sophomore center Katerina Mrázová's to knot the game at 2-2 and force it into overtime.
The Bulldogs fourth overtime of the season didn't solve the stalemate, so UMD entered into its second shootout of the year. Â From there,
Jenna McParland, who already had an assist on the night, netted the only goal the Bulldogs would need as junior netminder
Kayla Black stonewalled all three OSU shooters for the extra league point. Â In all, Black had 31 saves prior to the shootout, and UMD was outshot 33-30 in the game overall.
UMD will finish up the 2014 portion of the current season tomorrow night against the Buckeyes at OSU Ice Rink. Â Game-time is set for 6:07 p.m. ET.
