The University of Minnesota Duluth occupies ninth place in the 2013-14 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA)/Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings through the winter sports season.
UMD has accumulated 325.00 points to date, which is tops among any of the 16 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schools. The closest NSIC member is Augustana College, which is 16th (2929.00 pts). Grand Valley State University (718.00) leads the pack, followed by Adams State University (425.00), Shippensburg University (397.00 pts.), Ashland University (395.50) and West Texas A&M University (361.50 pts.)
The Directors' Cup points system is based on each institution's finish in NCAA II Tournaments in up to 14 sports (seven women's and seven men's) throughout the academic year. That includes seven fall sports -- two of which UMD does not sponsor (men's soccer and women's field hockey) and five winter sports (men's and women's indoor track and field are the lone two the Bulldogs compete in). This past fall, UMD advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA II Women's Soccer Tournament, the NCAA II Volleyball Central Regional title game and the NCAA II Super Region Three football semifinals where each was ousted by the eventual national champion. In addition, the Bulldog women took tenth place at the NCAA II Cross Country Championships this past November and finished 10th -- their highest placing ever -- at last weekend's NCAA II Indoor Track and Field Championships.
