BULLDOGS CAN'T REBOUND LATE IN BACK-AND-FORTH CLASH WITH CONCORDIA

The University of Minnesota Duluth rallied back and forth throughout a high-scoring affair, but Concordia University, St. Paul held off the Bulldogs 75-70 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference interdivisional contest on Friday evening in St. Paul.

UMD (5-6, 3-4 NSIC) falls in its first game of the new calendar year, while CU (6-6, 3-3 NSIC) pulls even on the season.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Junior forward Taylor Meyer continued to lead the Bulldogs offensively, collecting another double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds along with two steals, a block, and an assist. Senior guard Jessica Newman finished with 11 points and seven assists on the evening. Sophomore forward Kenzie Kane finished 4-of-6 from the floor including 2-of-3 behind the arc to hit double digits for UMD with 10 points. Sophomore center Allyson Harris also added 10 points off the bench for the Bulldogs.
• Senior guard Ameshia Kearney netted 17 points for Concordia, one of four Golden Bears to reach double digits scoring. Senior forward Anika Whiting netted 11 in becoming the top scorer in program history for CU.

Both teams started out quiet offensively, a combined 4-of-11 from the floor in the first three minutes of the game, but it did not last long. Despite four early turnovers by the Bulldogs, Concordia took just a 10-7 lead into the first media timeout when head coach Annette Wiles refocused her UMD squad. Meyer scored out of the timeout and hauled in a defensive rebound leading to a score by Anna Monke that gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 11-10.  The Bulldogs started to heat up, making seven of their next ten baskets, but the Golden Bears reclaimed the lead and stretched it to seven after turning the ball over from UMD 11 times in the opening half. The Bulldogs scrapped back and took another lead with three consecutive three-pointers while forcing three turnovers on ten straight scoreless possessions for Concordia. The 12-point swing ended with a lay-up by Whiting as Concordia again claimed the lead with just under a minute remaining in the frame, but UMD took a 36-34 lead to the locker room when Jessica Newman heaved up a half-court score as time expired. The Bulldogs shot 43.8 percent in the first half after starting just 1-for-5.

The streaks continued coming out of the break, with Concordia reclaiming the lead at 46-40 before UMD netted 10 straight points to take a four-point lead, holding the Golden Bears off at 57-53 as the clock ticked under 10 minutes remaining in the game. Both teams continued to shoot the lights out of the Gangelhoff Center in the second half, with Concordia taking a one-point lead at 65-64 with just three minutes remaining.  The Bulldogs remained pesky, just a score back of the Bears as senior guard Danielle Flood nailed a jumper to keep UMD within a pair at 72-70 with 35 seconds remaining. After a Bulldog timeout, CU's Ameshia Kearney nailed three free throws on four attempts to hold off UMD in the closing seconds.

The two teams combined to shoot nearly 50 percent in the second half (27-of-59), but Concordia's 57.1 percent in the second half helped them edge UMD, who fell to just 39.7 percent for the game while CU bounced back to 46.8. Despite 14 boards from Meyer, the Bulldogs were out-rebounded 44-34 in the game, including 29-10 in their own offensive zone.
