Pick your poison, University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey opponents, because the Bulldogs are looking dangerous across their entire line-up.
No. 6 UMD picked up right up where it left off Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn. by defeating Minnesota State University, Mankato 4-0. The Bulldogs not only outscored the Mavericks 16-0 in the series sweep, but their second shutout of the weekend handed junior goaltender Kayla Black a piece of the all-time career shutout record with her 17th career shutout.
The Bulldogs didn't allow an MSU power goal all weekend, but they used a Maverick power play to score their first goal of the game on Saturday. After a scoreless first period, Lara Stalder netted a shorthanded tally — her third of the series — a mere seven seconds into the second period. Â
That score would stand until late in the second stanza when senior forward Zoe Hickel netted her 15th goal of the season at the 19:25 mark. Hickel's team-high 15th goal also extended her current scoring streak to seven games. Sophomore Ashleigh Brykaliuk, who assisted Hickel's goal, recorded one of her own just 29 seconds later to stretch UMD's lead to 3-0 with six seconds remaining in the period. Brykaliuk not only repaid Hickel with an assist, but put Black back on the scoresheet with her first assist for the 2014-15 season. The assist is Black's fifth career helper — already a Bulldog netminder record.
Sophomore center Katerina Mrázová — who had dished out four assists in Friday night's triumph —picked up her sixth goal of the year on the power play 10:21 into the final period to make it a 4-0 skate. Brienna Gillanders and Brigette Lacquette had the helpers on Mrázová's goal, and for Lacquette, who heads to Team Canada camp on Sunday, sealed a five-point weekend for the defenseman (3g, 2a).
Black was busier Saturday, turning away all 25 shots she faced en route to etching her name further into the Bulldog record books. With eight shutouts this season, Black now stands alone with the single-season record and shares the career record with former All-American Riitta Schaublin for the present time. Erin Krichiver made 33 saves for MSU who went 0-of-4 on its power play, while the Bulldogs went 1-of-4 for a total of six power goals in the series.
UMD is back at AMSOIL Arena next Friday and Saturday night to host Western Collegiate foe North Dakota University. Both games are set to get underway at 6:07 p.m.
