NO. 2 MINNESOTA TOO MUCH FOR NO. 6 BULLDOGS

Box Score The final score at RIdder Arena Friday night certainly was no indication of what the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team is capable of.

Handicapped by four first-period goals in the first 13 minutes, the No. 6 Bulldogs found themselves too far into a hole too early to the No. 2 University of Minnesota.  UMD ended up with a 7-1 setback to the Gophers in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, falling to 17-9-5 overall and 12-9-4 in WCHA contests.

After Minnesota scored the games first two goals in the opening 6:15 of the contest, senior forward Meghan Huertas netted her 11th goal of the season at the 8:18 mark to draw the Bulldogs within a single tally at 2-1.  But a Gopher goal 32 seconds later followed by another at 12:56 gave Minnesota a 4-1 lead into the first intermission, and it was one UMD just could not recover from on the scoreboard.

The Gophers added one power play score in the second period and two early in the third period to tuck the game out of reach.  Minnesota outshot the Bulldogs 47-30 in the game, but after being outshelled 19-9 in the opening stanza, UMD closed the shooting gap to 17-12 in the second period and 11-9 in the final 20 minutes of play.

Bulldog netminder junior Kayla Black made 34 saves in 42:42 of action, while junior Kariss Grapp made six saves and allowed one goal in 17:18 between the pipes.

UMD will have one last regular season shot at the Gophers tomorrow afternoon at Ridder Arena.  Game-time is set for 4:07 p.m.
