Like the afternoon before, the Bulldogs caught fire in the last two minutes of the game, but unfortunately for the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team, the No. 8/9 University of North Dakota nabbed the final ember.

UMD scored two goals in the final 89 seconds -- including one with just 22 seconds Saturday at AMSOIL Arena -- to force overtime against the Fighting Hawks, but it was North Dakota that crushed the comeback with a goal of its own late in overtime to steal a 4-3 triumph from the Bulldogs.  The loss drops UMD to 9-14-1 overall and 6-11-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

"Slow start to the game, had a lot of power play opportunities that we didn't capitalize on," said head coach Maura Crowell.  "I credit the players for coming back in the third and getting some big, big goals, timely goals and the second day in a row with a 6-on-5 goal, so that was huge.  Unfortunately, we didn't have our focus for the full 65 minutes that we needed."

Similar to Friday, North Dakota stormed out to an early 2-0 lead with a goal 45 seconds into the contest off a rebound by Layla Marvin, followed by a second goal that fluttered up and over UMD goaltender Maddie Rooney at the 4:54 mark.

Bulldog junior forward Lara Stalder cut that lead in half to 2-1 with 16:38 played in the first, after she one-timed the puck from the slot on extended goal line pass from Ashleigh Brykaliuk.  The goal was Stalder's team-high 12th goal of the season, and sent UMD into the first intermission down by just a single goal.

Both teams would play a scoreless second period, and the contest held at 2-1 until North Dakota's Vilma Tanskanen put the Fighting Hawks up 3-1 with just 2:38 remaining in regulation.

Enter the Bulldogs, that appeared to have their two-minute drill rearing to go all weekend.  Junior blueliner Sidney Morin scored her third goal in as many games off a shot from the right point with 89 seconds remaining to draw UMD within a single goal at 3-2.  Then, with just 22 seconds left in regulation, junior forward Demi Crossman charged the net and somehow managed to get just enough of the puck past UND's Shelby Amsley-Benzie in heavy Fighting Hawk traffic to knot the game at 3-3 and force overtime.

North Dakota's Gracen HIrschy used a waved off icing with 35 seconds remaining in extra time to sneak the puck just inside the post on Rooney, who finished with a career-high 44 saves on 47 Fighting Hawk shots.  

The Bulldogs had 45 total shots in the game, but just 19 on net.  The Fighting Hawks, credited with blocking 17 of UMD's shots, posted 47 pucks on net in the game and held the Bulldogs scoreless in seven power play attempts.  North Dakota improves to 13-6-3 overall and 10-5-3-1 in the WCHA with the overtime win.

UMD remains at AMSOIL Arena next weekend, right smack in the middle of the team's longest home stand of the season when it hosts Bemidji State University.  Friday night's game is set for 7:07 p.m., while Saturday's contest will get underwat at 4:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  The overtime was UMD's fourth of the year, and seventh with North Dakota in the last 16 meetings dating back to 2012-13...The Bulldogs are 0-5-2 in extra time against the Fighting Hawks over that span...UMD's picked up its first penalty 84:56 of action Saturday afternoon...Ashleigh Brykaliuk's scoring streak continued after the junior forward had two assists on UMD's first goal and game-tying third goal...Bryakaliuk now has 17 points onfive goals and 12 assists over the last 10 games...Michela Cava also had two points on the day with two assists, her sixth game of the year with two or more points...Sidney Morin's three-game goal streak marks the fourth time in the junior defenseman's career she has recorded a point or more in three consecutive skates...Morin's goal also now give the Minnetonka, Minn. native 11 career goals, tying her for 10 on UMD's all-time career scoring chart for defensemen with Julianne "Montana" Vasichek, who compiled 11 goals in 124 games as a Bulldog between 2001-2005...Morin has reached the top-10 list in just 97 games.
