OHIO STATE'S POWER PLAY TOO MUCH FOR BULLDOGS IN WCHA SERIES OPENER

For 30 minutes, the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team looked like it had the upper hand on Ohio State University, but the scoreboard simply refused to yield that result to the Bulldogs Friday night.

The Buckeyes grabbed their first win against UMD this season at AMSOIL Arena, a 6-4 win propelled by OSU's four power play goals.  The Buckeye win makes tomorrow night's showdown between the Bulldogs and OSU  a crucial game for sixth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.  UMD currently sits in sixth place with 19 points while the Buckeyes are in seventh with 17.

"We played really hard for the last 30 minutes," said head coach Maura Crowell.  "I like that we stick together, I like that we believe in ourselves all the way through, and you know, another goal or two and we are right back in it."

UMD jumpstarted the busy first period scoreboard with a goal from senior forward Michela Cava, who backhanded a puck off the boards for the games first score at 3:25.  OSU equalized 20 seconds later on the power play, but Cava struck again at the 9:21 mark for the 2-1 lead.  Again, the Buckeyes countered using their power play, scoring back-to-back goals with an extra skater at 13:37 and 16:01 of the opening stanza.  But the Bulldogs again drew even on their second power play tally of the night with 31 seconds remaining in the first period.  Junior forward Ashleigh Brykaliuk — who had an assist on Cava's second goal — netted her 10th goal of the year from just under the right circle.

After playing to a 3-3 tie in the first period, the Buckeyes caught fire for a six minute span to open the second period, and by 6:17 of the second period, UMD suddenly trailed OSU 6-3.

Rookie forward Morgan Morse cut into that Buckeye lead 8:44 into the third period of play, skating through multiple OSU defenseman before backhanding the puck in to bring the never-quit Bulldogs to within two goals at 6-4.  The Bulldogs, who lost leading scorer Lara Stalder 11 seconds into the third period due to a checking from behind penalty, shelled the Buckeyes in the final stanza, outshooting OSU 14-6, but simply could not find a result in their extra effort.

"A lot of adversity, you have to overcome it, that's what good teams do," said Crowell.  "I believe in these guys, I always will.  They stick together and they are a really good group.  We just need to put together 60 minutes."

All three Bulldog goaltenders saw action in the game, with senior Kayla Black picking up the final 32:07 of action and holding OSU scoreless over that span on 12 attempts.  The Buckeyes outshot UMD 33-32, and while the Bulldogs were a perfect 2-of-2 on their power play, OSU matched it, going 4-of-5 with an extra skater.

The two squads will round out the series, the last game in UMD's six-game homestand, tomorrow afternoon at 4:07 p.m.
