The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team faced the No. 2 University of Wisconsin Friday afternoon with a severly depleted roster, and the Badgers wasted no time making the Bulldogs pay for it.
UMD fell behind by four goals to Wisconsin in the first period, and was never able to recover, suffering a 5-1 setback at LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wisc. Â The loss snaps a three-game winning streak the Bulldogs carried into the contest, and drops the Bulldogs to 9-11-1 overall and 6-8-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.
With five players missing from its line-up (including second leading scorer
Lara Stalder and
Maria Lindh, who ranks fourth in points), UMD's heavily altered lines felt the wrath of the Badgers early and often. Â UW scored three goals between the 5:41 and 9:29 marks, and tacked on a fourth goal with 34 seconds in the period to take a 4-0 into the first intermission.
Sophomore defenseman
Jessica Healey scored her second goal of the season on the power play 6:51 into the second period, but a Badger power play 1:59 later put the lead back to 5-1. Â Both teams were scoreless in the final period, but the Badgers outshot the Bulldogs 20-1 in the stanza and 56-18 in the contest.
Senior goaltender
Karissa Grapp entered the game in the second period and was brilliant in between the pipes for UMD, making a career-high 38 saves on the 39 shots she faced, including all 20 UW shots in the third period. Â
Both teams will wrap the series up on Sunday, with the puck set to drop at 12:07 p.m.
