UMD COMES IN SIXTH AT SATURDAY'S LEWIS UNIVERSITY CROSSOVER MEET

In its final tuneup before the Northern Sun Intercollegiae Conference Championships, the University of Minnesota Duluth took to the road to Romeoville, Ill., where the Bulldogs placed sixth among 14 teams -- many of whom were nationally ranked -- at the Lewis University Conference Crossover meet on Saturday morning.

Grand Valley State University, which occupied the No. 2 spot in  this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II Poll, cruised to the team title with 21 points -- six points shy of a perfect score. No. 10 University of Southern Indiana was a distant second (80 points), followed by host Lewis (119 pts.), which received votes in the USTFCCCA II Poll, Northwest Missouri State University (137 pts.), No. 4 in the latest USTFCCCA Central Region Poll, the University of St. Francis (147 pts.), which was ranked second in the NAIA National Poll,  UMD (173 pts.), Ferris State University (181 pts.) and Michigan Tech University (196 pts.).

"This was a very competitive field," said UMD head coach Paul Nisius. "The depth of our team showed today as there was a shakeup in the top seven finisher. It was nice to beat Michigan Tech as they were one of the two teams to finish ahead of us last month at the St. Olaf Invitational."

For the third straight race, Isaac Overmyer reigned as the Bulldogs' top individual finisher. The sophomore from Park Rapids, Minn., placed 17th overall out of 184 runners with an 8K time of 25:14.21. Three juniors -- Henry Jessen (19th place; 25:18.06), Grant Pulver (35th; 25:50.36) and Cody Sedbrook (47th; 26:11.18) -- and sophomores Nick Lawson (55th; 26:30.71) and Adam Armbruster (60th; 26:30.71) were next.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Oct. 22 for the NSIC Championship in Sioux Falls, S.D.
