The University of Minnesota Duluth built some playoff momentum with a dominating 67-53 victory over a streaky Minot State University team in the 2015-16 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season finale for both teams.
UMD (7-19, 7-15 NSIC) opened up the first run of the game, holding the Beavers without a score from the floor for the first 4:11 of the game and taking a 12-2 lead in the same timeframe. Minot State (11-17, 8-14 NSIC) took the next run, taking its first lead of the game with a 13-3 run including nine straight points. The Beavers scored 12 points on free throws in the first half, getting the Bulldogs in foul trouble early during the first and second quarters. UMD scored 11-of-13 points coming out of the quarter break, but Minot State once again had an answer and UMD led by four at 33-29 heading to the locker room.
The two teams traded points in the third quarter but neither ran off any significant streak , with the Bulldogs building on their lead with a 16-14 edge in the period. The mid point of the fourth quarter saw the Bulldogs leading by six, and a technical foul called against Minot State's bench helped UMD build on that with senior guard
Taylor Dillinger knocking down a pair of free throws to help pad the Bulldog lead. That triggered a scoreless streak for the Beavers, who went the 6:20 without a field goal in the final frame, scoring just two points on free throws as UMD turned a 51-49 lead to a 67-53 victory in that span.
First-year forward
Emma Boehm led the way for the Bulldogs netting 19 points off the bench, matching her career-best output. She hit 4-of-4 from three point range. Junior center
Allyson Harris and first-year guard
Sammy Kozlowski each hit double digts with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Sophomore forward
Allison Olley grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, five on the offensive end. Minot State was led by 12 points off the bench from Madison Wald and 10 points from starting forward Savannah Kingsbury.
UMD knew it would be heading to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the first round of the playoffs prior to the game but still awaited its playoff match-up. Officially, the Bulldogs will meet the NSIC South Division second-place team, the University of Sioux Falls tonight as the Cougars defeated Concordia University, St. Paul this evening. Game time has yet to be officially announced but will likely be 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday night.
