The University of Minnesota Duluth was unable to withstand a late push by No. 20 Winona State University and have now dropped two in a row after having a won five straight.
Down by five heading into the fourth quarter, the Warriors (14-3; 9-2 NSIC) rattled off a 12-3 run in a span of 6:38 to retake the lead over the Bulldogs (9-6; 7-4 NSIC). UMD shot a dismal 2-of-19 (10.5 percent) for just seven points in the final 10 minutes of the game.Â
After falling to the Bemidji State University last Saturday, the Bulldogs looked to get back to their winning ways against the Warriors. UMD shot an efficient 57.1 percent on 8-for-14 shooting in the first quarter, led by an early eight points on 3-of-3 shooting from sophomore guard
Sammy Kozlowski. The Warriors took a 35-31 lead heading into half by connecting on 50 percent of their shots (15-for-30). UMD kept it close by shooting 13-for-28 (46.4 percent) in the first half but knocked down just 3-of-11 three-pointers.Â
The Warriors starting five combined for all but six points, with four of them reaching double-digits, including senior center Kayla Timmerman with 18, senior guard Jenny Tuttle with 17, senior guard Tara Roelofs with 11, and junior forward Hannah McGlone with 15. The four combined for 61 points on 23-for-44 shooting.
UMD will try to bounce back as they face Upper Iowa (2-13; 2-9 NSIC)Â on Saturday (Jan. 14). Tip-off is at 4 p.m.Â
