Nicky Johnson, who enjoyed a record-setting Men's Basketball career at the University of Minnesota Duluth, will join three other enshrinees on July 11 when the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame holds its 2017 induction ceremonies. The class of 2017 also includes Kristen (Schmidt) Soukup, (Concordia University-St. Paul softball); Brett Beeson, (Minnesota State University-Moorhead basketball) and Butch Raymond (former NSIC commissioner, Southwest Minnesota State University athletic director and St. Cloud State University and Minnesota State University-Mankato men's basketball coach). Johnson is the 23rd ex-Bulldog to be inducted into the NSIC Hall of Fame, which got its start in 1986.

A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Johnson owns the distinction of being the UMD men's basketball program's first NAIA All-American as he received third team honors as a senior in 1982-83 after being named an honorable mention pick the previous winter.  He anchored the UMD backcourt for four seasons during which the Bulldogs rolled up an 83-29 overall record. During his farewell collegiate go-around, Johnson captained UMD to its second NSIC title in as many years en route to attaining All-Northern Intercollegiate Conference status for the second straight year. He finished first among Bulldogs in assists four years in a row and established a then-school career record in that department (494). The two-time NAIA All-District 13 Team honoree currently holds down the No. 21 spot on UMD's all-time scoring charts with 1,332 points in 110 games (a 12.1 points per outing average).

In February 2006, Johnson was selected to the Bulldogs All-75th Anniversary team and eight months later was inducted into the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame.
