Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

NO. 5 BULLDOGS HEAVILY OUTSHOOT ST. CLOUD STATE IN 3-2 SETBACK

Despite putting 50 shots on goal for the first time in almost four seasons, the Bulldogs just couldn't quite get to the back of it.

The No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team shelled St. Cloud State University, but it was the Huskies that slipped out of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. with the 3-2 win Saturday afternoon.  The loss is the first by the Bulldogs in four games, and it came against the 50-21 shot goal advantage UMD had in the contest.

Four of the five goals on the afternoon were tallied in the second period, including the game's lead-off goal by Hannah Potrykus 5:02 into the stanza for the SCSU 1-0 lead.  The Bulldogs responded 3:35 later when Ryleigh Houston cashed in a power play to draw UMD even at 1-1.

The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead at 13:44 on another power play goal, this time by sophomore forward Naomi Rogge, who had assisted Houston's score.  Houston had an assist on the goal, and freshman forward Gabbie Hughes picked up second assists on both UMD goals in the skate.

Potrykus struck again for the Huskies with the 2-2 equalizer at 15:15, and after 40 minutes of play and a 36-16 shots on goal advantage, the Bulldogs were left with 20 minutes to search for the series sweep.

Unfortunately for UMD, who peppered SCSU 14-5 in SOG in the final period, it was the Huskies that got the lone break in luck with just 3:40 remaining in regulation.

SCSU, who got 39 stops from Janine Alder Friday night, got even more from goaltender Emma Polusny Saturday.  Polusny had 48 saves for the Huskies, while UMD netminder Maddie Rooney had 18 for UMD.

The Bulldogs will take a week off from their grueling schedule to face the Minnesota Whitecaps of the NWHL next Saturday at AMSOIL Arena.  The puck will drop at 4:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  UMD is now 5-4-1 overall and 3-4-1 in WCHA play ... while the Bulldogs have gone 4-1 at home, they are just 1-3 on the road ... the 50 shots on goal posted Saturday was the first time UMD has hit the half a century mark since racking up 59 against Minnesota State back on Jan. 23, 2015, a 12-0 win for the Bulldogs in Mankato, Minn.
