It was a story of two halves.
In what appeared to be an easy go-around for Minnesota State University-Moorhead after taking a 29-18 lead into the second half, the University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team stormed back for a 59-47 win.
The Bulldogs (16-10; 13-9 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) ended the Dragons' (22-4; 19-3 NSIC) 16-game win-streak.
UMD finishes the regular season with its best overall record since the 2011-12 season when it finished 18-10, and with its best record in the NSIC since that same year (15-7).Â
The first half proved to be a struggle for the Bulldogs offensively. UMD shot a combined on 8-of-32 for 18 points while not attempting a single free throw. It was just the third time all season the Bulldogs have been held to less than 20 points in either half.Â
After a forgettable first 20 minutes, the Bulldogs used a huge third quarter to come storming back into the game. Down 29-18, UMD started the third on a 13-2 run to tie things up 31-31. Junior guard
Emma Boehm accounted for seven of the 13 points.
With 22 seconds remaining in the third, senior center
Allison Olley corralled an offensive rebound and knocked down a jumper to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the day at 37-36. Olley would draw a foul on the play, and make the free throw to put UMD up by two. A last second layup by the Dragons tied the game going into the final 10 minutes.Â
It was a back-and-forth beginning to the fourth quarter, with five lead changes in the first five minutes. With the score tied at 43-43, sophomore forward
Katie Stark connected on her one and only basket of the evening, a three-pointer, to give UMD the lead which it wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Junior guard
Sammy Kozlowski led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Kozlowski garnered 15 of her 17 points in the second half, where she also got all three of her steals which included one at midcourt with 3:23 remaining, and in a one-on-one situation spun past the defender to lay it in to give the Bulldogs a 50-43 lead.
Freshman forward
Sarah Grow finished with her fifth double-double of the season (10 points, 10 rebounds). Grow was one of the few bright spots for UMD in the first half, shooting 3-for-5 for six points.Â
The Bulldogs held the Dragons to 20.7 percent shooting (6-of-29) from the floor in the second half.
The first round of the NSIC playoffs will start on Wednesday, Feb. 21. UMD will take on the No. 5 seed of the NSICÂ South Minnesota State University-Mankato at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth, Minn., on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
