The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team was unable to continue its recent success with a 71-65 loss against St. Cloud State University. The Bulldogs (13-9; 10-8 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) drop to 4-6 in North division matchups, and suffer its first loss of the season when leading with 5:00 remaining in the game (13-1).
Junior guard
Sammy Kozlowski had herself a night with a career-high with 13 assists, distributing the ball to six different scorers. Her 13 assists were a season-high mark in the NSIC, and tied for ninth most in the NCAA Division II this season. Freshman forward
Sarah Grow was the main beneficiary of Kozlowski's passes, knocking down four shots for eight points off her assists. Grow would be one of three UMD scorers to finish with double-digit points including sophomore forward
Katie Stark (13) and junior guard
Emma Boehm (12).
The Bulldogs' leading three-point shooter freshman guard
Ann Simonet knocked down 3-of-7 three-pointers, finishing with nine points.
After a three-pointer by Boehm with 5:36 remaining, UMD would be held scoreless on 0-of-8 shooting for the remainder of the game excluding a last second three by senior forward
Anna Monke.
UMD shot 22.2 percent in the fourth quarter on 4-of-18 shooting after shooting 46.8 percent combined in the first three quarters (22-for-47).
The Bulldogs will take on Northern State University (20-4; 15-3 NSIC) on Friday (Feb. 9) at 6 p.m. The Wolves are second in the NSIC North division, having won five straight and eight of their 10 road contests this season. NSU shoots 46.5 percent from the floor in conference games which is the best in the NSIC.
UMD will play its final home game of the regular season against Minnesota State University-Moorhead (19-3;16-2 NSIC) on Saturday (Feb. 10) at 4 p.m. The Dragons hold the top spot in the NSIC North, and have won 13 straight. Their last lost came at the hands of the then-No. 12 Northern State Dragons 69-65.
