No. 3 Clarkson University came from behind Friday night twice to hold off the No. 10 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team 4-2 in the first night of the two game series.

In the Bulldogs first official action of the season, UMD had two players tally two points -- senior forward Sydney Brodt (1g,1a) and junior defenseman Ashton Bell (2a).

Sophmore Gabbie Hughes picked up just where she left off last season, banging home a rebound from a Bell shot from the point just 31 seconds into the skate.  A little over two minutes later, Clarkson equalized, but the Bulldogs regained the lead again at the 12:52 mark.  Brodt skated a puck wide right and below the circle to beat Golden Knight goaltender Amanda Zeglen to for the 2-1 lead.

Clarkson countered again midway through the second period, netting a power play goal from Brooke McQuigge at 13:25.  The Golden Knights pulled ahead for the first time all night just over three minutes later on a tally from Michaela Pejzlova at 16:54, and CU added a rebound goal from the top of the crease 1:13 into the third period, the eventual 4-2 final.

UMD outshot the Golden Knights 12-10 in the first period, but CU had the slight edge in the overall game at 32-25.  Senior goaltender Maddie Rooney made 28 saves -- far more than she needed to take over the No. 2 all-time career saves spot for UMD.  Zeglen had 23 stops for CU, which improves to 3-0 so far on the season.

The Bulldogs will have another crack at the Golden Knights Saturday afternoon in game two of the series.  The puck is set to drop at AMSOIL at 3:00 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  WIth her 10 saves in the first period, Maddie Rooney overtook Riitta Schaublin for the second most career saves in program history ... Rooney now has 2,485 stops in 88 career skates at UMD.
