NO. 12 UMD FALLS ON ROAD TO NO. 3 MINNESOTA STATE

MANKATO, Minn. -- A top-15 showdown between the top-ranked teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's North and South Divisions did not produce the excitement that Bulldog Country anticipated as the No. 12-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth football program fell 52-7 to No. 3 Minnesota State University on Saturday afternoon at Blakeslee Stadium.

The third-ranked Mavericks struck for an 80-yard touchdown pass on the game's first play from scrimmage, taking a 7-0 lead just 16 seconds into the game against the Bulldogs. No. 3 MSU (5-0, 4-0 NSIC South) used its two-quarterback system effectively in the first quarter, with Ryan Schlichte and J.D. Ekowa totalling three touchdown passes and holding the ball for 8:54 of the first 15 minutes to take a 21-0 lead after one.

Tailback Nate Gunn added a one-yard rush to cap off a 42-yard drive in the second quarter, and Ekowa ran one in on his own to push the lead to 35 at the break. As for the offensive side of the ball, a pair of first-half turnovers did No. 12 UMD (4-1, 4-0 NSIC North) little favor.  Junior halfback Cazz Martin continued to run the ball effectively with a 16-yard scamper on his first carry of the day. Junior quarterback John Larson rushed eight times for 38 yards in the first half, including a 20-yard play, but the Bulldogs could not get the passing game going early with Larson just 3-for-7 in the half.

Sophomore quarterback Garrett Olson took over the UMD offense in the second half, finishing 8-for-16 for 130 yards on the day, including a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Armani Carmickle to end the shutout bid. Carmickle's 8-yard catch completed a 9-play, 55-yard drive with 10:30 remaining in the game.

The Bulldog defense stiffened in the second half, but Minnesota State's offense continued to produce results, moving the score to 45-0 before the end of the third. Senior linebacker Isaac Erdmann led all Bulldogs with eight tackles, including four solo.

NOTABLE
UMD had not lost in NSIC competition in 24 games, dating back to the team's last meeting with Minnesota State on Sept. 16, 2017 … the Mavericks trim the Bulldogs' lead in the all-time series to 20-18-1 … the game marked just the second time this season UMD has failed to rush for at least 150 yards (81).

UP NEXT
No. 12 UMD returns home to take on Wayne State (Neb.) College (2-3, 1-3 NSIC South) in another cross-divisional match-up next Saturday, Oct. 12 as part of UMD Homecoming weekend. Opening kick is set for just after 1 p.m. at Malosky Stadium airing live on 610 KDAL AM and the My9 Sports Network.
