NO. 9/10 BULLDOGS AND NO. 7 BUCKEYES FIT TO BE TIED

Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth and Ohio State University so closely mirrored each other Saturday afternoon, it was no surprise to anyone inside of the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio that the end result was a 1-1 tie.

Neither the No. 9/10 Bulldogs or the No. 7 Buckeyes could break away from each other late in the game, and despite double overtime and an extra 10 minutes of hockey, it took all six shootout skaters to finally award the extra Western Collegiate Hockey Association point.

It wasn't for a lack of effort.  After another scoreless opening period between the two squads, UMD got on the board first Saturday when Anna Klein collared her fourth goal of the season at 6:11 of the second period.  Klein's goal was assisted by Bulldog leading scorer Gabbie Hughes, who had a team-best two points in the series after recording a goal Friday night against OSU.

The Buckeyes bounced back on high shot from Sophie Jaques at 16:25 that drew OSU even at 1-1.  Though UMD unloaded 21 shots on Buckeye netminder Andrea Braendli in the second period to OSU's nine, neither team could land any more punches in regulation.

After an overtime that produced no other goals, UMD finally got to play in its first 3-on-3 overtime period rolled out by the WCHA this season.  Ironically for the Bulldogs, because they carried a power play into the second overtime, it was 4-on-3 until the power play ended, and both teams skated 4-on-4 for a majority of the overtime.  In fact, both sides only saw 36 seconds of 3-on-3 by the time the first whistle to stop action blew.

OSU's Jenn Gardiner netted the lone goal of the shootout to land the Buckeyes the extra point in the game.

UMD goaltender Maddie Rooney made 33 saves, bringing her grand total to 71 in the series.  Braendli stopped 32 for OSU, who just barely outshot the Bulldogs 34-33 in the skate and are now 8-3-3 overall and 6-3-3-1 in WCHA play.

The Bulldogs (7-4-1, 4-3-1) will return to AMSOIL Arena next weekend to host the No. 1 University of Minnesota.  The Friday-Saturday series will begin each afternoon at 3:07 p.m.
