Kalynn Tilton smashed the go-ahead home run and
Breanna Swint threw a gem as the University of Minnesota Duluth picked up a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference split over Concordia University, St. Paul Sunday morning at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud, Minn. The Golden Bears picked the first game 3-2 while the Bulldogs countered with a one-run decision of their own, winning 2-1.
The Bulldogs kept hold of third place in the league standings as they moved to 21-14 overall and 12-4 in conference action. The Golden Bears move to 22-16 and 9-9 in the NSIC.
Swint spun a masterful game as she fired a complete-game (her 16
th this season) three-hitter allowing only one run. The junior from Marysville, Calif., fanned eight batters on her way to her 10
th victory -- all while doing so on her birthday. The eight strikeouts matched her season high as she retired 11 of the last 13 batters she faced including ending the game with back-to-back strikeouts.
Tilton provide the loudest hit of the morning as she broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth. The Forest Lake, Minn., native hit one to the warning track in right earlier but got all of the one in the fifth. Tilton just missed on a 0-2 pitch, fouling it back to the screen but she didn't miss the second 0-2 pitch as she launched it over the left field wall.
Concordia-St. Paul coughed up its 1-0 lead the inning before as UMD loaded the bases and freshman
Bre Bresnahan watched ball four go by her for a bases-loaded RBI walk to knot the game.
The Golden Bears rallied down 2-0 to upend the Bulldogs 3-2 in the opener. Concordia-St. Paul scored twice in the fourth and took the lead the next inning as Golden Bear starting pitcher Kali Kaestner held UMD to just four hits.
Freshman
Sam Pederson got the start in the circle and shutdown the scoring threats in the first three inning before CSP delivered a one-out two-RBI double to tie the ballgame. Hannah Mortenson knocked in the eventual game-winning run in the fifth on a single back through the middle. Pederson suffered just her fifth loss of the season while striking out four as UMD
Freshman third baseman
Emma Frost had one of the four Bulldog hits in game one. Frost gave UMD the lead in its first at-bats of the morning as she bounced a RBI single around the second baseman. Sophomore first baseman
Jordyn Thomas knocked in the other run as junior shortstop
