BULLDOGS SLAY DRAGONS TO CONCLUDE ROAD SCHEDULE

The University of Minnesota Duluth got a combined 10 RBI by junior shortstop Lauren Oberle, junior outfielder Jayme Langbehn and sophomore Taylor Koehnen as the Bulldogs wrapped up its final Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road double header with a sweep over Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Wednesday.

UMD, which was slotted seventh today in the second installment of the NCAA II Central Region Rankings, runs it record to 29-17 overall and 19-7 in the conference with 6-3 and 11-3 victories over the Dragons. It finishes its regular season road record at 10-6 after sweeping the last two series.

Oberle, Langbehn and Koehnen hammered Dragon pitching as the trio combined for nine hits at the dish and accounted for driving in 10 of the 18 Bulldog runs in the twinbill. Oberle had one of the three doubles on the day as the wind played a factor on the ball staying in the park. Koehnen gathered her first-career three-hit outing in the second game. Langbehn factored in on three RBI, bring her total to 15 – a new collegiate high for the native of Elk River, Minn.

Sophomore first baseman Jordyn Thomas compiled a team-high five hits over the afternoon in seven at-bats. Thomas has hit safely in the past four games and raised her batting average to a team-best .326.

In the circle, freshman pitcher Sam Pederson and junior pitcher Breanna Swint allowed only three earned runs to cross in both of their starts. Both pitchers spread out nine hits and struck out five Dragons apiece to secure the club a spot into the NSIC postseason.

MSU-Moorhead (13-30; 7-19 NSIC) fumbled a flyball in the second inning of the opener that proved costly. UMD jumped on that mistake and tagged three runs which was the difference in the 6-3 win. Langbehn was the long Bulldog to rack up two hits as the first five batters in the lineup corralled a hit.

UMD didn't need a mistake for the victory in the backend of the double dip. The Bulldogs struck five times in the first highlighted by a Koehnen two-RBI single. The Dragons were able to cut into the lead but UMD scored four times in the last three innings. Senior outfielder Sammi Sadler, senior outfielder Kalynn Tilton and Thomas all registered RBIs for good measure.

The Bulldogs will play Southwest Minnesota State University up next at home on the final weekend of the regular season. First pitch is slated to start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday (April 27).
