The University of Minnesota started out the weekend on a winning note.
It was a game of twos as freshman infielder
Emma Frost jacked a pair of home runs, the pitching duo allowed just two runs and the defense doubled up the opposition twice on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs have won six straight games – three consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference sweeps – after downing Minot State University twice at James S. Malosky Stadium on Friday. UMD (17-12; 8-2 NSIC) toppled the Beavers 4-3 in the first matchup then pelted Minot State (16-11; 5-5 NSIC) 4-1 to cap the first sweep by either club in four years.
The Beavers scored twice in the top of third inning off starting pitcher
Sam Pederson. The Bulldogs immediately helped their freshman hurler with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior infielder
Lauren Oberle smashed a double off the left-center fence to score senior outfielder
Sammi Sadler. UMD loaded the bases and freshman outfielder
Erin Thompson drew a full-count walk to knot the game at two.
Frost, who homered in two of her three at-bats and drew three walks, scored off a pass ball to take the lead. In the fifth, she doubled the margin on her first homer of the afternoon. Pederson slammed the door shut the rest of the way for her ninth win.
The Bulldogs jumped out in front in the third inning in the nightcap. Junior outfielder
Jayme Langbehn scored from first base after the Beavers threw a sacrifice bunt into right field. Langbehn got a great jump on the bunt placed down by sophomore infielder
Taylor Koehnen and never stopped running until she got home.
UMD pounced the next inning as Frost and senior outfielder
Kalynn Tilton both went deep to increase the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0. The Beavers escaped the shutout as they collected a rally in the sixth with three straight hits. Junior pitcher
Breanna Swint pitched another gem as she gave up one run for the second straight outing.
The Bulldogs attempt to keep their unblemished 4-0 home record in tact on Monday when they host the University of Mary for a pair of NSIC contests. First pitch of the double header begins at 12:00 p.m. at Malosky Stadium.
