NO. 9 BULLDOGS SHUT OUT NO. 2 MINNESOTA AT RIDDER

What a difference a day makes.

The No. 9 University of Minnesota Duluth flipped the script on the No. 2 University of Minnesota Saturday afternoon, shutting out the Gophers 2-0 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. in game two of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.

The Bulldogs had 35 saves from senior goaltender Maddie Rooney, who ended up with a total of 80 on the weekend.  Senior forward Sydney Brodt led all scorers with a goal and an assist as UMD improved to 1-2-1-1 against Minnesota this season.

The Bulldogs delivered the message early that Saturday was a new day when Hughes baited Gopher netminder Syndey Scobee just 1:28 into play for her 14th goal of the year.  Hughes, who was assisted by Brodt, scored her seventh goal against Minnesota in 10 career appearances.

Brodt further highlighted UMD's mindset at 13:11 of the second period on a blast from the circle that pinged off the pipe and past Scobee for the senior's 12th tally of the season.  Defensemen Maggie Flaherty and Kailee Skinner were credited with assists on Brodt's goal -- Flaherty's 12th helper this season and Skinner's second, respectively.

The rest was up to the Bulldogs defense that helped Rooney by blocking 17 shots in the game and held the Gophers scoreless on five power play attempts.  Rooney made all 35 stops on the Gophers she faced,  her fourth shutout of the season and 13th of her career. It was also the program's first road shutout since Feb, 16, 2018 and second over a ranked squad this year.

The Bulldogs (13-9-4, 8-7-3-1) will head back to AMSOIL Arena after a two week road hiatus to host Ohio State University next weekend.  Both Friday and Saturday's game will get underway at 3:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  UMD has now had wins in two of its last four regular season appearances at Ridder...with a goal Saturday, Gabbie Hughes has seven goals and seven assists for 14 points in 10 career skates against the Gophers...UMD's five shutouts so far this season is the most since the 2016-17 season, when the Bulldogs had seven.
