For a third time in five meetings this season, the No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team and Minnesota State University, Mankato needed extra time to register a final decision.Â
Saturday afternoon that decision came at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, Minn., and after 65 minutes of official time, Bulldogs and Mavericks were knotted at 1-1 before
Jalyn Elmes notched the extra Western Collegiate Hockey Association point in the 3-on-3 second overtime. While the tie and overtime win keep UMD unbeaten against the Mavericks in 13 games dating back to Nov. 17, 2017, it also helped keep the Bulldogs in third place ahead of Ohio State University by a point in the league standings.
Compared to the nine goals scored Friday night, Saturday's contest was a goaltenders showcase. UMD's lone regulation goal came at 14:10 of the second period, an effort from
Gabbie Hughes. From her knees behind the net, Hughes found
Sydney Brodt alone in front of the goal, and Brodt hammered in her 15th tally of the season to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.
That lead held until just 23 seconds remained in the third period. With an extra skater, MSU's McKenzie Sederberg's shot from the point beat
Maddie Rooney to send the game into extra time, the third overtime game so far between the two teams this season.
MSU outshot UMD 26-22 in regulation and 1-0 in overtime, but the game officially ended in a tie after the initial overtime period. The Bulldogs, who are unbeaten in five 3-on-3 WCHA overtimes so far this season, picked up their fourth win in just that scenario at the 2:13 mark when
Jalyn Elmes jumped up into the play and beat Calla Frank clean to help secure the extra point for UMD.
Rooney had 26 saves for UMD, while Frank had 22 for the Mavericks, who are now 11-16-6 and 4-14-4 in the WCHA.
UMD played its seventh overtime game of the season Saturday, and owns a 16-9-5 overall record and 11-7-4 in league action. The Bulldogs will return to AMSOIL Arena next weekend to host Wisconsin in a Friday-Sunday series. Senior night, which will be held Friday, will get underway at 7:07 p.m., while Sunday's contest is slated for 2:07 p.m.
