UMD COMES UP SHORT TWICE ON OPENING DAY OF ESU 5-STATE CLASSIC

Emporia, KS - The University of Minnesota Duluth dropped a pair of one-run ball games with Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Athletics Association opponents Friday afternoon in the Emporia State University 5-State Classic. The Bulldogs came up short against Northwest Missouri State University, falling 2-1, before losing a late, 6-3, lead to Emporia State University to fall 7-6 in eight innings on day one of the Emporia State University Classic.

In the game one setback, the Bulldogs fell behind in the bottom of the first inning on back-to-back solo home runs from Sydne Brashear and Kaitlyn Weis off of senior right-hander Breanna Swint. The Bulldog offense was held hitless until the top of the sixth inning when senior center fielder Jayme Langbehn, with junior right fielder Jessica Bren on third base and one out, laced a single back up the middle to score Bren and cut the Bearcats (3-8 overall) lead in half at 2-1. In the top of the seventh, with second baseman Taylor Koehnen as the potential tying run on first base, freshman pinch hitter Sidney Zavoral struck out swinging to end the game. Swint pitched all six innings in the circle for the Bulldogs. She allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three and only surrendering one walk. The Bulldogs were held to one hit and left seven runners on base.

The Bulldog bats woke up in game two against Emporia State (6-5 overall) where they recorded 11 total hits. Senior shortstop Lauren Oberle wasted no time in the nightcap by connecting on a lead-off home run to center field. Later in the frame, junior first baseman Jordyn Thomas drove in senior left fielder Lauren Greeder with a base hit to give the Bulldogs (2-6 overall) an early 2-0 lead. UMD plated three more runs in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of a single to left field from Greeder that brought Koehnen and Zavoral into score. Greeder would come around to score from second base on the next at-bat when Bren singled to center to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 advantage. Koehnen, who went 3-for-4 in the game, added one more run for the Bulldogs in the fifth with a base hit to right field to drive in freshman pinch-runner Makenna Burslie. A double and a single off of sophomore right-hander Sam Pederson cut the Bulldog lead to three runs at 6-3. Two Bulldog errors led to three Hornet runs to send the game to extra innings. With a runner placed on second base to begin the inning, Emporia State used a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly out to right field to walk-off the Bulldogs. Pederson tossed the complete game for UMD and in 7.2 innings of work, she surrendered seven runs (only four of which were earned) and fanned five Hornets while allowing one walk.
