STARIHA, ZAVORAL PUSH UMD PAST MISSOURI SOUTHERN STATE TO CAP OFF ESU 5-STATE CLASSIC

Emporia, KS - The University of Minnesota Duluth used a complete game shutout from freshman right-hander Mady Stariha (3-1) and a two-run home run from freshman right fielder Sidney Zavoral to cap off the Emporia State University 5-State Classic with a 2-0 victory over Missouri Southern State University Sunday morning.

MSSU (6-5 overall) threatened right away in the top of the first inning, filling the bases loaded with two outs but Stariha was able to force a fly out to left field to end the frame. In the top of the second, Stariha worked her way out of another bases-loaded jam. With one out and the bases filled, senior shortstop Lauren Oberle threw home to force the runner out and prevent the Lions from scoring. Another fly out to left field closed out the inning on the next at-bat. Junior second baseman Taylor Koehnen led off the bottom of the second inning with a double to left field. Two batters later, Zavoral launched her first collegiate home run over the left-field fence to give the Bulldogs (5-6 overall) a 2-0 advantage. The two-run lead was all Stariha needed as she only surrendered two more hits after escaping the two bases-loaded jams to begin the game.

Notables:
All five Bulldog hits came from five different batters: senior left fielder Lauren Greeder (1-for-3), junior third baseman Jessica Bren (1-for-3), senior center fielder Jayme Langbehn (1-for-3), Koehnen (1-for-2 with a run scored), and Zavoral (1-for-2 with a HR and two RBIs) ... In Stariha's 7.0 shutout innings she surrendered five hits and struck out one and walked one.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs will have a couple of weeks off before they venture south to Winter Haven, FL to square off with Truman State on Mar. 7. First pitch is set for 8:15 a.m. (CT).
