UMD CRUISES PAST UPPER IOWA IN OPENING ROUND OF NSIC TOURNAMENT

The No.1 seed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference University of Minnesota Duluth won their first game of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament 81-54 against No. 8 seed from the South Division Upper Iowa University. That win not only advances UMD to the second round, but also gives them an undefeated record at home, going 14-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs started the game off on fire, jumping out to a quick 24-14 lead in the first quarter. Most of those points came from Sophomore forward Brooke Olson, who scored 15 points (3-3 on 3-pointers) in the first seven minutes of the game.

The second quarter was a different story as the Bulldogs shot just 31.3% from the field and went 0-4 on 3-pointers. The Peacocks took advantage of UMD's cold streak and put up 18 points in the quarter, 12 of those points coming off 3-pointers. UMD went into halftime with a 35-32 lead.

The Bulldogs came out of the second half still struggling to stop the UIU offense which led UMD Coach Mandy Pearson to call timeout at 5:33 in the third quarter with the game tied 42-42. After the timeout, the Bulldogs couldn't be stopped as they went on a 21-3 to close out the quarter, giving them an 18 point lead. From there they ran away with it, never letting the Peacocks come within 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Olson finished with a new career high 33 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Senior forward Katie Stark finished with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard Maesyn Thiesen finished with seven points, four assists and two steals. Junior guard Payton Kahl finished with six points, four assists and two steals.

Overall UMD shot 46% (29-63) from the field and 42.9% (9-21) on 3-pointers.

The Bulldogs will play Northern State University in the second round of the tournament on Sunday March 1st at 2 p.m. in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
