The University of Minnesota Duluth emptied everything in the barrel against one of the nation's best squads in Division II softball and came out on the wrong end both times.
No. 15 Saint Leo University topped the Bulldogs at home 9-6 and 5-4 in 10 innings on Tuesday at the University Softball Stadium in St. Leo, Fla.
UMD (9-10) was swept for the first time this season.
Junior first baseman
Jordyn Thomas collected four hits in the opener. Thomas singled her first three plate appearances then launched a two-run bomb to right field. Thomas and the Bulldogs were able to puncture the Lions for six runs.
UMD delivered the first blow knocking three times in the top of first on four hits. The 15th-ranked Lions erased the lead with three runs in the first and three more in the second. Saint Leo tacked on three more insurance runs later.
Each club was able to hammer the starting pitching. The Bulldogs chased starter Sadi Avants after two-thirds of an inning off work. Senior
Breanna Swint was charged with five earned runs while punching out a pair of batters in the loss.
Sophomore third baseman
Emma Frost, along with Thomas, had a pair of RBI and junior second baseman
Taylor Koehnen and senior outfielder
Jayme Langbehn each knocked in a run in game one.
The Lions appeared to have a stranglehold of the second game. The UMD bats were held mostly in check until the fourth when freshman outfielder
Sidney Zavoral lifted a mistake over the heart of the plate down and over the left field line to knot things at 4-4.
Zavoral was one of six Bulldogs to rake hits and the only Bulldog with a pair. Thomas started the Bulldog scoring, shooting another homer -- her team-leading sixth -- in the second.
The game became a pitching duel as each side posted zeros on these board from the fifth inning until the bottom of the tenth when the Lions won on a walk off sacrifice fly.
Sophomore pitcher
Sam Pederson pitched eight innings giving up four runs, just two earned, in the night cap. She struck out two but didn't offer any free passes. Freshman
Mady Stariha whipped up a scoreless ninth before dishing up the final run due to international tiebreaker.
UMD concludes its Florida adventure tomorrow with a doubleheader against Florida Southern College. Action begins at 5:00 p.m. EST at the Chris Bellotto Field in Lakeland, Fla.
