The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team wrapped up a ten-game road trip today with a doubleheader at Minnesota State Mankato. The Bulldogs played the Mavericks in their opening weekend of the season two months ago (going 1-1 versus the Mavericks that time). Today, UMD would drop the first game 7-0 and the second game 2-1.
Game 1:
The Bulldogs would get hits from Lauren Oberle, Kiana Bender, Julia Gronholz, and Sidney Zavoral in today's first game, but would be unable to string together any runs and a 7-0 lead would prove to be too much to overcome.
The Bulldog bats were quiet during the first game, managing only four hits.
Minnesota State would get the scoring started in the third inning, scoring first off a sac fly RBI, followed by an RBI double to center field. A single up the middle a few at-bats later would see the Mavericks leading the Bulldogs by a score of 4-0. MSU would get another 3 runs en route to the victory.
Game 2:
The Bulldogs and Mavericks would strike early in game two before a pitching duel shut down both squads at the plate. Â
Kiana Bender would score the lone run for the Bulldogs in the second game, getting past home in the first inning thanks to a single through the right side from Jordyn Thomas. Bender, Thomas, and Julia Gronholz would all record hits for the Bulldogs in the first inning.
Minnesota State would score two runs and rack up three hits in the bottom of the first and add hits in the second and fourth innings, but the game would remain locked at 2-1. The Bulldogs would try to put together a rally but could not add anything to the scoreboard as the final would stay 2-1.Â
Lauren Dixon would throw 6 solid innings giving up the only 2 runs with 7 strikeouts for the Bulldogs but would be out done by the Mavericks Katie Bracken, who would throw a complete game 4 hitter and record the win.
UMD will be back at home this coming weekend, welcoming Upper Iowa and Winona State to Duluth. First pitch on Saturday is at 1:00pm, with Sunday's first game beginning at 12:00pm. For the full 2021 season schedule, click here.
